Here's about how it goes:
"3 months until our lease is up… lets get searching for the perfect, cutest, DC row house! Its going to be newly renovated, in a convenient location, with a cute back patio, stainless steel appliances and parking for everyone!"
So you start searching craigslist/hot pads/trulia/every real estate website in existence and think: "Look at all these great listings! We'll find a place in no time!"
But then reality sets in: "Wait…how come all these perfect places will cost me my first born child!?"
But its okay, you can definitely afford some of these places even if they're 8 blocks from a convenient metro stop, you have to share a bedroom, they're in a basement, etc.
So you go to a handful of open houses and the only thing you find there? Disappointment.
But eventually you do find the perfect, affordable house! Unfortunately, you're competing with 30 other tenants.
You apply anyways because hey, you never know! Every answer back is: "Sorry, we've already processed someones application. But if it doesn't work out for some reason, we'll let you know!" So you're just like:
And the weeks go by....
Until finally, just when you think you're going to be homeless, you get the call: "Congrats! Your application looks good and we'd like to set up a time for you to sign the lease!"
You end up with a "beautiful newly renovated row house." Your "dream house!" Granted one of the bedrooms will have to be shared between two people, everyone has to pay $1200 in rent, there isn't enough storage space… but in the words of Tim Gunn: you'll make it work, right?

So there you have it folks; this has been my life for the past few months. I am actually very happy with the new place though and we move in September 1st! For the record, our new place does have stainless steel appliances and a super cute patio, but we'll also have to give up parking and split two bedrooms between three people. I guess that's life as a post-grad in DC for you!
